Shetani

1982 Stained cedar
35"h x 8"w x 8"d

In East Africa a Shetani is a spirit of the forest. Like European elves, the Shetani is mischievous and can cause all kinds of problems for unfortunate villagers. The sculpture, which is inspired by the Maconde style of abstract carving originating in Mozambique, represents a female shetani with her familiar (rather like a witch's cat) that often takes the form a chameleon, looming over a man from the local village.
