Greene Manne

1997 Mahogany
25"h x 25"w x 2"d

The Greene Manne, sometimes called the Stone Man is found in churches throughout Europe carved either in stone or wood. The face is part man and part tree with each sculptor seeking to produce an original touch on what is perhaps the most copied figure among wood carvers. Variations on the greene manne are found in many cultures around the world and are believed to represent renaissance and the rebirth of nature after the winter.
